Soy Wax vs. Paraffin

100% Soy Wax is a renewable resource grown and manufactured right here in the United States. There is a huge difference when you burn vegetable wax compared to paraffin wax. It is like comparing apples to oranges. Paraffin is a by-product of the oil industry, AKA crude oil. Paraffin is the sludge that remains in the bottom of the barrel, then refined to make all of the petroleum by-products on the market today. Lighting a paraffin candle is just like lighting a small diesel engine in your home, complete with all of the chemicals and toxins to pollute your indoor air and lungs.

Soy is completely non-toxic and non-carcinogenic, and soy candles produce little or no soot to damage the surrounding room or to those like us with allergies and breathing problems. Soy wax is environmentally safe, biodegradable and a renewable resource. It is easily cleaned up with just soap and hot water.

Soy candles also burn cooler than most paraffin wax candles, which will lessen the risk of serious burns from melted wax. They also burn up to 50% longer than paraffin wax candles which makes them more economical to use. They also seem to hold their fragrances extremely well compared to paraffin. Paraffin candles smell like a potpourri of fragrance and soot. You can watch the trail of soot from a paraffin candle and then watch a soy candle burn clean.

When petroleum products are burned as fuel, they give off carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that is linked to global warming. They are also loaded with chemicals to help them burn better and hold fragrance.

Our soy wax is pure and natural, without the use of any chemical additives. We do not use soy blends, only 100% pure soybean wax made in the USA.

Beware of False Advertising!

Beware of bargain priced soy candles, and false claims. Many candles are labeled “all natural” soy wax, when only 25% of it is actually soy, and 75% paraffin or other wax. A false claim will look like this:

"All natural soy wax candle" Sugar Cookie Scent, and the color is Brown.

This is misleading and false advertising because an “all natural” soy candle would be made of 100% Soy Wax, Essential Oils and Dye Free white. Sugar cookie is a synthetic fragrance, because it does not grow from nature. The brown color is most likely a petroleum-based dye, and there aren't any 100% natural candle dyes on the market. We give our customers the choice of fragrance oils, soy-based fragrance oils, essential oils or unscented, colored or dye free. Natural wicks are made of natural fibers such as cotton, cotton/paper (htp), or hemp, never any lead or metal cores.

Palm Wax Candles & Orangutan Extinction

Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)

Palm wax candles are another healthy vegetable-based wax. However, please be aware that palm oil comes with a higher price than you think. It comes from the oil palm trees in Malaysia and Indonesia. Be sure to purchase only from RSPO certified palm wax candle companies. If your palm wax candles are not certified by the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil), you may not know you are contributing to the destruction of rainforests, loss of animal habitat, animal extinction, and the livelihood of native peoples. Remember, just because it is natural, doesn’t mean it is always earth friendly or cruelty free. Tens of thousands of wild orangatans have been barbarically slaughtered with guns and machetes, due to the ever-growing demand for palm oil plantations. Most of the plantations are in Borneo and Sumatra, and the atrocities are not going to stop any time soon. It is estimated 90% of orangutan habitat in Indonesia and Malaysia has already been lost and over 5,000 perish every year. There is an overwhelming number of orphaned baby orangutans as a result of the devastation, and many of them are traumatized from their injuries and the loss of their mothers, while learning to live with their new human mothers. Imagine, learning to trust humans, the very species that killed their family. When a product becomes so widely used, the people of those countries who harvest the raw materials will do whatever they have to do to make money and get rid of the animals that are in their way. They are destroying rainforests to plant more oil palm trees due to the large demand for it, and wild orangutans are suffering and becoming extremely endangered. In 1998, one third of the entire wild orangutan population died during a massive forest fire on Borneo that was intentionally set to down trees for the production of oil palms. Now there is a 525 mile area that is reserved for more plantations in which they will burn right through more orangutan habitat. Scientists predict the wild orangutan population will be gone within the next 6 years.

How can I help? Contact the Orangutan Foundation International. They accept donations to care for the orphaned orangutans. You can help them with their reforestation projects, foster an orphan, and learn about the Tanjung Puting National Park reserve. Read the ingredient labels and do not purchase items made with palm oil or palm kernal oil. Many items have palm oil in them, such as, potato chips, fried snacks, bread, crackers, many asian fried/baked snacks, margarine, shortenings, confectionaries, soaps, detergents, even soaps that claim to be eco friendly!!!! Palm oil is also found in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and body products. It is said that 90% of companies do not know where their palm oil comes from.
