Candle Care & Safety

Safety Precautions

Remember, you are playing with fire!

It is very important to follow safety precautions when burning candles. Please make note of the following instructions:

  • NEVER leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Keep candles out of reach of pets and children.
  • Do not burn near drafts, vents or flammable objects.
  • Only burn candles on heat resistant surfaces.
  • Caution should be taken to avoid damage to furniture.
  • Always burn in a well-ventilated room.
  • Extinguish flame if it smokes, flickers or if flame touches container.
  • Do not burn candle if glass container is damaged or cracked.
  • Glass containers can become very hot and caution should be taken to avoid injury.

DO NOT EXTINGUISH BY PLACING THE LID ON THE CONTAINER. NOT ONLY IS THIS DANGEROUS, IT WILL LEAVE SOOT IN YOUR CONTAINER, AND POSSIBLY CRACK THE GLASS. THE LID CAN BECOME VERY HOT!!!

Proper Care & Troubleshooting

Our wicks will naturally curve to one side, which limits mushrooming, be sure to center the flame.

Jars
Allow your jar candles to burn until the wax pool reaches the sides of the container. About 2-4 hours, and no more than 4 hours at a time unless it's a big jar. If you don't let your candle burn to the edges it will tunnel down the middle and the wick will drown. You will ruin your jar candles every time if you don't let it burn to the edges. Keep the wick trimmed to 1/8"-1/4". Each time the melt pool reaches the edges, dip the wick into the melt pool to turn it off. Allow the wax to harden, trim the wick and relight. If the wax is not melting on one side, position the flame a little closer to the unmelted side, but not touching the glass container, about an inch away from the glass. Discontinue use when only 1/2" of wax remains at the bottom. Pour the remaining wax in the trash and wipe with a napkin. Never pour wax down the drain. Wash with your regular dishes and return to us for a 10% off refill. Don't wash the lid, the paint will peel. If necessary, we will repaint your lid.
Tealights
Tealights should be burned on a heat resistant surface. Light your wick at 1/4", allow a full melt pool to form, then trim to 1/8"-1/4". The shorter the wick and flame, the longer your tealight will last. If you like a big flame and no maintenance, your tealight will burn about 5-1/2 hours. With regular short trimmings it will burn 8 hours with a small flame.
Votives
Votives should be placed in a tightly fitted container. If your votive has a mind of it's own and wants to burn on one side, it is usually because the wick curves to one side. A curving wick is actually a good thing. It helps to keep carbon build up to a minimum. Be sure to center the “flame", use your wick dipper or a spoon to push the solid wax down into the melt pool, creating a level surface. You could also try shifting the flame over to the uneven side (not touching the glass), then reposition once the wax has melted. If you let it burn unevenly your wick will drown. Do not let the flame touch the glass or it may crack. Always keep wick trimmed to 1/4 inch to minimize smoke and soot. Your candles will also burn longer when they are trimmed. Discontinue burning when 1/2" inch of wax remains in the bottom of the container. Continued burning could damage the glass container. For longer lasting votives, wait until the wax pool is established to the edges, then trim the wick short enough to where it has a small flame. Center your flame to the center of the container.
Tarts
Place in a well ventilated, tart approved burner. Do not add water. Never heat on a stove or any non-certified tart appliance. Do not allow flame to touch underside of melt pot. Do not heat if pot contains less than 1/2" of wax. Our tarts are loaded with twice the amount of fragrance as our highly scented candles. Do not pour the wax in your drains.

Proper Extinguishing

Never extinguish your candles by placing the lid on the container. When extinguishing a candle, use a wick dipper, by dipping the wick into the melted wax (or with something that is NOT flammable, like a spoon) to ensure it is completely snuffed out. I like to dip the wick into the wax pool because it does not produce any soot from a smoldering wick. This also strengthens the wick when it's not in use, and helps it to relight again. Be sure to center the wick afterward.

Limiting Black Soot

When burned properly, these candles are virtually soot free. If the wicks are not trimmed properly, soot may form from carbon build up on the wick or if you blow it out. Remember to trim your wicks to 1/8"-1/4" prior to each burning. Clip off any carbon build up with wick trimmers. Never extinguish your candle by placing the lid on the container. Not only is this dangerous, it will leave black soot in the container. Heavily fragranced soy candles may also leave more soot than one made light or without fragrance.

Clean Up

Unlike paraffin wax, all you need to clean up a soy wax spill is soap and hot water. Soy is soft and clean up is easy! We cannot guarantee that our dyes will not stain, it happens. You may even get an oil stain, since soy is made of vegetable oil. However, rest assured, the wax will wipe off of tables and countertops with ease.
