About Our Founder and Crafter

Soylar Candles began with a stay-at-home mother who wanted to leave a better planet for her two small children. Through the years, Irene Guoz saved all of the baby food jars she collected from her children when they were eating jar foods. She knew that the jars would be a great source for crafts, and especially for her love of scented candles. Soylar Candles was started by the need to do work at home and use the baby food jars she had collected. Her husband Jaime works outside the home, but is always there to lend a helping hand with the heavier projects.

When Irene hosted her first solar energy tour she was inspired to do more. Combining her passion for the environment, family values, and her love of crafts, she created a home-based business run on solar power with an emphasis on fair trade and natural ingredients. It was important for her to find some kind of work that allowed her to stay at home with her children, and be there whenever they needed her. She also has a passion for helping others to live sustainably by using reusable products that don't harm the environment the way disposables do. Through the years, Irene also learned to use a sewing machine, and sew simple products for her home and children. She is now able to bring reusable cloth items to her online store. Irene is especially thankful that she can work around her children's schedule and do something that is both meaningful and rewarding.

Irene now has many people from around her city collecting jars for her mission to reuse, reduce and recycle. It has also made many people feel good they are donating jars to a worthy cause, because a portion of the sales goes to help fund environmental projects, such as planting trees, renewable energy projects, energy efficiency and education. All of the containers Irene uses are reused food jars, and some are made of 100% recycled glass. We hope you enjoy reading our pages about caring for the environment as well as enjoy our wonderful candles and natural products!

"Whitey," our work-horse favorite!

[Whitey]

Our work-horse, "Whitey," the Ford Ranger EV is currently undergoing some needed surgery. Apparently there was an electrical fire over at the dealership, while Whitey was at the charging station. He lost some batteries, and other vital organs were harmed. We are waiting patiently for his safe return.

Whitey is an originally built Ford Ranger EV that happened to survive the senseless crushing of electric cars in 2003. When we received Whitey, we were able to let "Brownie" retire of her duties as a gas guzzling mini van. Later, money raised from Brownies' estate was donated to our animal friends at the San Diego Zoological Society in California.
